The Kikuya House : A Beautiful 17th Century Traditional Japanese Merchant House

Hello Again. Today, I’d like to take you along with me to see The Kikuya house. Located in the picturesque seaside castle town of Hagi in Yamaguchi prefecture, the Kikuya house is one of Japan’s largest and finest examples of a traditional Machiya built in traditional Shoinzukuri style.

As the official merchant to the Choshu Han, the Kikuya played a vital role in the construction of the city, and the residence was occasionally used to receive dignitaries travelling on official business.

The white walled four-hundred-year-old townhouse has two storage houses, two large gardens, and a tea house. Visitors can enjoy the Kikuya’s large collection of Edo period memorabilia on display in the house and in the two storehouses. (Photography and Video are prohibited in the storehouses)

House and Garden

The Genkan – the entrance

The house was built in the traditional Shoin-zukuri style and remains largely intact.  The main house, front garden, main store house, money vault and boiler room are open to the public throughout the year.  However, the larger rear tea garden is only open during certain times of the year. The tea house can be reserved for those who would like to practice tea ceremony in this historic setting. Rental Kimonos are also available.
